You just listed the best knife brands in North America. Why wouldn't you want a Case knife made in Bradford, PA? Most custom knife-makers only make fixed-blade knives. So, when it comes to folders, you're pickins get slim.

Start by getting one with either a thumb stud on the blade or a thumb hole. With practice you can open it almost as fast as any auto knife. Practice using your thumb and flicking your wrist at the same time. Remember, Practice, Practice , Practice.

You don't want to carry a knife for self defense unless you are trained. Pepper spray or a stun gun or batton are a better choice.

BUT - since you asked. - You need a "spring assist" knife like a Kershaw leek:

I have the silver one - it is EXCELLENT. - sharp - well built too.

Technically it is not a switchblade, but a lockback with a spring assist (you open it part way and the spring does the rest - but it essentially flicks open) so it is legal most places - but you better check with your local PD.

Kershaw is the best. i owned one and it lasted forever.. easy to sharpen and stays sharp even after cutting wood, rope, sticks, pencils, leather, a few deer, unscrewing screws, you name it, im really rough on my knives. i bought it for 65 dollars, it was gunmetal in color and was a folding lockblade. i keep my knives sharp enough to shave with(a razorblade). this knife will impress you. mine got stolen about 8 months ago. bet its still sharp :) come with lifetime guarantee too.

Sad state of affairs in this country when we have to worry about getting a pocket knife but I can understand your concern.

A folding knife is legal in every state. When they are spring loaded, as in switch blades or stiletto's. They may not be. Illinois takes a very hard stand on auto knives.

Other states do not and some say you can have them if you are a collector, (although there are no special provisions for being a collector or having a license to " collect")

When I was in high school, it was still pretty common for at least the guys to have pocket knives. Believe it or not, there were no rules and arrests over it either.

You should be fine buying anything offered in a store in your state. You may find you'd like to try you hand at making folding knives. Those kits are available.
